Role Purpose

 

The role of an Underwriting Analyst at Starr is both challenging and rewarding, offering an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced underwriting team at the forefront of how insurance is distributed.

 

Working within our Portfolio Solutions team, you will support all aspects of the underwriting and portfolio management process, helping to ensure the team operates efficiently while delivering exceptional service to our partners. You will gain exposure to a broad range of insurance products, underwriting disciplines, and market relationships, providing a strong foundation for a successful career in the insurance industry.

 

This is a varied, hands-on role where no two days are the same. Responsibilities include preparing risks for underwriting, liaising with brokers and clients to obtain and validate information, supporting data collection and analysis, and helping maintain the integrity of our underwriting data and processes.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Support the execution of the Portfolio Solutions underwriting strategy.
  • Assist in the assessment and analysis of new and renewal business opportunities.
  • Support the development and maintenance of pricing models for underwriting decisions.
  • Maintain underwriting pipelines, renewal trackers and management information.
  • Liaise with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders to obtain and validate key underwriting information.
  • Take ownership of underwriting data quality, ensuring information is accurate, complete and up to date.
  • Monitor risk processing workflows and resolve data queries with outsourced service providers.
  • Manage bordereaux collection, validation and reporting to support portfolio oversight.
  • Support delegated authority and operational reporting requirements.
  • Work closely with Operations, Analytics and other support functions to drive efficient processes.
  • Utilise data and reporting tools such as Power BI, Databricks and Azure to generate insights and monitor portfolio performance.
  • Contribute to projects focused on operational excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Build technical underwriting, pricing and portfolio management skills through exposure to a diverse range of insurance products.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, training and development opportunities to support professional growth.

Qualifications, skills and experience

 

Essential

  • A degree in a numerate or analytical discipline
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and draw meaningful insights.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to build relationships with colleagues, brokers, and business partners.
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • A proactive mindset with a willingness to learn, challenge conventional thinking, and contribute new ideas.
  • An interest in insurance, financial services, and the factors that influence business and market performance.

 

Desirable

  • An understanding of insurance principles and underwriting concepts.
  • Experience working with data analysis, reporting, or business intelligence tools.
  • Knowledge of, or an interest in developing skills in, coding and data-focused languages such as Python, SQL
  • Awareness of the legal, regulatory, and compliance environment within financial services.
  • Experience presenting analysis and findings to different audiences.
